HOW DOES IT WORK?
Prebona’s products for infection control (internal name -AgSol) uses silver atoms as the active ingredient.
All the silver atoms are attached to the surface of the silica particle and will, therefore, be able to interact with it’s surroundings and perform it’s disinfection task. The huge active surface of the silica particles is 450 m2 per gram which creates an enormous exposure of the silver atoms. This way AgSol charged with silver atoms can combat various kinds of microorganisms using hundreds of times less silver compared to competing technologies. Furthermore, it offers several advantages such as broad-spectrum activity against bacteria and virus and lower tendency to induce resistance. Prebona is able to design the compound on an atomic level with desired number of silver atoms per silica particle and exact size control of the carrier particle, which will allow for the most effective solutions. When dissolved in water, silver is predominantly present in its +1 ionic oxidation state (Ag+) which express high activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. The low toxicity to human tissue has led to use in medicine. This means that hundreds of times less active material is used compared to competing technologies such as silver nanoparticles. Additionally, there is a greater stability provided by silica-based nanoparticles as well as a long-lasting effect. The long-lasting effect is due to the fact that the silica carrier particles acts as a reservoir for the silver atoms and also binds to different surfaces.
